The Gig Economy* is attracting a wide range of people at different levels of their career either to become completely independent and self-employed or to make extra money as a casual worker.

In this workshop, Ann Norris of Douglas College will discuss the process of finding work in the Gig Economy for those who are currently unemployed and are, for the most part, looking for a way to earn money until they can find sustainable full-time work in their chosen career.

Learning Objectives:

  • Know how to choose an industry related to long-term career goals in order to make contacts that may be useful in the future.
  • Identify businesses in the community that hire subcontractors.
  • Know the legal aspects of working as a contractor, including insurance, business licenses, and worksafe coverage.
  • Weigh the benefits and risks of working for hire, either as a path to permanent employment or as a long-term career choice.
  • Understand the benefits to an employer of having a flexible workforce.
